Self Assessment Essay

As the first semester comes to an end, I reflect on the experience as a whole, especially in this class. In these past five months, I have written and read pieces I would have never even thought of. This class has taught me more than just about how to improve my writing. It also showed me a bit about myself and the kind of writer I am slowly becoming.

The blackboard discussion posts and readings and papers can be stressful and tedious at times, but I am thankful for them because they helped me improve my writing and gain a better understanding of several Course Learning Outcomes (CLO). Each one of the entries we read was different, but all were about field studies which I believed prepared me enough for my field study. Reading many different styles of writing enables us to discover whom we want to be more like as writers.

The field study project we did helped I think many of my classmates, including myself by forcing us to maybe step out of our comfort zone. Throughout the process of completing the project, we were asked to write several papers to help us with our writing for our final paper. In each of the papers, we needed to have our peers read them and edit them, which is one of the CLO’s. Through reading each other’s work, we can find mistakes in their writing that we unknowingly do on our own. We were also asked to do some research on our topic and use databases that we had never used before although I had used the databases before I was not until this class that I became comfortable with them because I was looking for information dealing with a topic I have interest in.

I do believe that my writing has improved since the beginning of the s class. When we started this class, I did not think I would enjoy it because I very much dislike reading and writing as time went on and we had to do interviews and observations I liked it more. Although I was enjoying the content, my writing was not changing until I had read the comments left by the professor. I feel from a young age we are taught how to write one way which we might not like, and then in college, we are told the way we were writing all this time was wrong. For example, the professor wrote on almost every single one of my papers to have shorter sentences, but in middle school and high school, I was told short sentences meant it was choppy. At first, when I started to change how I wrote, it sounded choppy, but as I continued, I noticed it changed. I learned how to write short yet informative flowing sentences.

This class, overall, was very interactive and allowed me to have discussions with my classmates. I liked that everything we read and everything we wrote all led up to this one writing piece, which was the field study. In my previous sociology class, we had done a field study, but since it was a work and family class, it had to be about work and family. This class, on the other hand, allowed us to venture out into a whole new world of groups of people we found intriguing. By venturing out, we were able to leave our comfort zones, and I appreciate a class like that.
